Who Needs a Michigan Bonded Title?

Michigan Vehicle Code Section 257.217 requires individuals who don't have proof of vehicle ownership to file a surety bond. Typically, you will need a Michigan bonded title under these conditions:

  • You did not receive a title when you bought the vehicle.
  • The title you received was incorrectly assigned to you.
  • You received a title but lost it before transferring it into your name.

How to Get a Bonded Title in Michigan

Simply follow the steps below to receive your Michigan bonded title(s).  

Step 1: Determine your vehicle’s appraisal value

First, determine your vehicle’s appraisal value. The title bond amount must be two times the value of your vehicle. You can use Kelley Blue Book to appraise your vehicle or contact the Michigan Secretary of State Vehicle Title Division.

Step 2: Purchase a Michigan title bond

Step 3: Complete the bonded title application

Submit the completed title application form, surety bond form and other supporting documents to your local Secretary of State branch office. Once approved, you will typically receive your bonded title within a few weeks.

Do I Need to Renew My Bonded Title? 

Your Michigan bonded title and title bond will expire three years from the effective dates and won’t require renewal.
