What is an Oregon commercial contractor license bond?

Oregon commercial contractor license bond” is a general term used to describe the different surety bond requirements enforced by the state for commercial contractor licensing. Oregon Revised Statutes Section 701.084 requires individuals file a surety bond before performing commercial contractor work in the state. The terms of each bond form vary, but generally these bonds ensure commercial contractors provide construction services according to state laws. If they fail to do so, their issuing surety company will pay valid claims up to the full bond amount, which the noncompliant contractor must reimburse.

Who regulates commercial contractor licensing?

The Oregon Construction Contractors Board enforces licensing for commercial contractors in Oregon, including the surety bond amount requirements. If you have questions about your existing contractors license or new construction contractor application, you can contact the Board by calling 1(503)378-4621 or emailing [email protected].

The Oregon Construction Contractors Board requires this bond for commercial contractor licensing. The CCB enforces a separate Oregon residential contractor bond for residential contractor licensing. We also offer other Oregon contractor license bond types in the state.

What types of commercial contractor license endorsements are there in Oregon?

The Oregon Construction Contractors Board enforces the following commercial contractor license endorsements

Commercial General Contractor Level 1 (CGC1) & Commercial General Contractor Level 2 (CGC2)

These contractor license endorsements allow a licensed contractor to supervise, arrange for, or perform an unlimited number of building trades with small or large commercial projects. The only difference between the two is that a level 1 contractor must have 8 years of experience while a level 2 only needs 4 years of experience.

Commercial Specialty Contractor Level 1 (CSC1) & Commercial Specialty Contractor Level 2 (CSC2)

These license endorsements allow contractors to perform work that includes one or two building trades for small or large projects. Again, the only difference between the two is that a level 1 contractor must have 8 years of experience while a level 2 only needs 4 years of experience.

Commercial Developer (CD)

This endorsement allows a licensed contractor to arrange for the construction or development of property that they intend to sell. In order to do so, the contractor must meet the following requirements: owns the properties or interest on the properties that they are doing construction work on, arranges construction work on properties they intend to sell, acts in association with one or more licensed general contractors who have the responsibility of overseeing construction phases, and performs no construction work on the property.

What's the difference between a level 1 contractor and a level 2 contractor?

The Oregon CCB states that the difference between a level 1 contractor and a level 2 contractor is the years of construction experience they have. Level 1 commercial contractors must have 8 years of experience while level 2 commercial contractors are only required to have 4 years of experience. They can still complete the same work as one another.

The other main difference is the education training requirements for when contractors have to renew their commercial license every 2 years. The Oregon CCB will audit the company to make sure employees have met their education requirements. For level 2 licensed companies, key employees need to complete 32 hours of education training. For level 1 companies, hours depend on the number of key employees working.

  • 1 key employee = 16 hours of education
  • 2 key employees = 32 hours of education
  • 3 key employees = 48 hours of education
  • 4 key employees = 64 hours of education
  • 5+ key employees = 80 hours of education
