How to Become a Remote Online Notary in Texas
To become a remote notary public in Texas, follow these seven steps:
Step 1: Receive standard notary commission
Ensure that you are currently commissioned as a Texas notary public before applying for RON authorization. Also make sure your $10,000 Texas notary bond is up-to-date. There are no additional bond requirements for RONs.
Step 2: Select an RON vendor
Choose an online notarization software provider or platform approved by the Texas Secretary of State, such as Notarize, SIGNiX or BlueNotary.
Step 3: Obtain a digital certificate and notary seal
Purchase tools that are compatible with your chosen RON platform to ensure secure and compliant notarizations. Your Texas electronic notary seal must meet the following requirements:
- Contains the words "Notary Public, State of Texas" around a star of five points
- Contains your name and identifying number
- Lists the date your commission expires
- Shape is either a circle not over 2’’ in diameter OR a rectangle not more than 1” in width and 2-½” in length.
- Has a serrated or milled edge border
- Uploaded in BMP, JPEG, PNG or TIF file format
Step 4: Complete the application
Submit your RON application through the Texas Secretary of State's website. You’ll need to provide personal identification information and complete acknowledgements. Then, you’ll upload the following items:
- Signed Statement of Officer (using digital notary certificate)
- Electronic seal
- Credit card information for $50 application fee, plus 2.7% convenience fee
Upon submission, your application should be processed within three business days.
Step 5: Set up your technology
To successfully perform e-notarizations, make sure you have the appropriate technology, including:
- A computer with a webcam and microphone
- Secure, high-speed internet access
- RON software that supports two-way audio and visual communication
How Much Does It Cost to Get a Texas Notary Public License?
Becoming an RON in Texas can range from around $100 to several hundred dollars. You’ll pay a $50 application fee and will need to invest in RON software and A/V technology. The total expense depends on factors such as the vendor you choose and any additional tools you need to purchase.
How Much Can Online Notaries Charge for Services in Texas?
In Texas, online notaries can charge a maximum of $25 per notarization in addition to standard notary fees. They are required to post their fees publicly for transparency and must provide clients with a written, itemized invoice detailing their services.
