How to Become a Private Investigator in New York
The New York Department of State Division of Licensing Services requires individuals to be licensed and bonded before providing private investigation services in the state.

How to Become a Private Investigator in New York
Follow these eight steps to apply for your New York private investigator license.
Step 1: Verify eligibility
Before applying for your New York private investigator license, you must meet the following requirements:
- Be at least 25 years old
- Be the owner of the business
- Have at least 3 years of relevant investigative experience or 20 years as a police officer or fire marshal
Step 2: Pass the exam
You must pass the multiple-choice private investigator exam before applying. Bring your current photo ID, #2 pencils, admission notice (if applicable) and a $15 check to the exam.
You’ll receive a notice in the mail about your results: pass or fail. Exam results are valid for two years.
Step 3: Submit fingerprints
Next, you must complete electronic fingerprinting and submit the $88.50 fee, payable to IDEMIA. You’ll file proof of fingerprinting with your application.
Step 4: Purchase a surety bond
Purchase a $10,000 surety bond (Form DOS-1536) from a licensed surety provider. The New York private investigator bond costs $88 for the 2-year term. This bond ensures compliance with the state's licensing regulations — safeguarding clients and maintaining industry standards.

Step 5: Obtain liability insurance
If you plan to hire security guards, you must purchase at least $100,000 in limited liability insurance, or $300,000 aggregate coverage.
Step 6: Complete application form
Fill out the Private Investigator, Bail Enforcement Agent, Watch, Guard or Patrol Agency Application form and include all attachments. On the form, you’ll need to include your work history, residence history and five character references.
Step 7: Submit application and fees
Submit your application fee via check, money order or credit card (using a credit card authorization form), made payable to the Department of State. Be sure to include the appropriate fee payment, as required.
- $400 for an individual, proprietary license; plus $400 for each branch office
- $500 for a corporate or business license; plus $500 for each branch office.

Step 8: Await approval
The Division of Licensing Services will review your submission. You’ll receive your private investigator license once all requirements are met and approved.
